It is a topic that apparently concerns the author Ferri. There is a discussion of mythical figures and historical truths. Where the drawings are so routine, it is worth taking a look at the content of the volume, which is covered in snow with word jokes, a very successful running gag about Idefix and a pack of wolves as well as the typical speaking names. Traditions such as characters based on contemporaries (in this case the French author Michel Houllebecq) are continued, but this time there is unfortunately no really good hidden object. Conrad has established himself, the figures are sitting, so is the joke – only the horses seem strangely unsuccessful. Above all in terms of drawing, the volume remains true to its line. Too much change is not to be expected, the courageous Gaul and his not at all fat friend Obelix are too much of a brand, too profitable business for that.
Without the two creators – original author René Goscinny died ready in 1977 – a completely new era begins for “Asterix”. To the east: The Sarmatians lived northeast of the Black Sea. For the last time, “Asterix” co-creator Albert Uderzo had a hand in the development of the material, he died in March 2020. For author Jean-Yves Ferri and draftsman Didier Conrad, the artistic heirs of the tradition series, it is the fifth joint work. Adventures in Gaul and those on trips alternate. A new “Asterix” album is now released every two years. Gauls and Romans, a trip to foreign cultures, beatings and puns – “Asterix and the Greif” has everything that makes a successful band. On behalf of Caesar, they are to catch the holy animal of the people: the eponymous griffin. Because – how could it be otherwise – the Romans are at the door. They include the Sarmatians, whom Asterix and Obelix, along with the druid Miraculix and dog Idefix, come to the aid of. This is also due to the fact that comparatively little is known about the peoples who lived there in antiquity. The brave Gauls have never made it that far in the northeast of the continent.
